The Umbrail Pass (Umbrailpass) or Giogo di Santa Maria, connects Switzerland with the Stelvio Pass, in Italy at an altitude of 2.503 meters.

The Umbrail Pass is less well known than its big brother, the Stelvio Pass, but it is certainly a lot of fun and easier to drive, as well as being immersed in the unspoiled nature of Switzerland.

The path

Starting from Bormio, after the beautiful curves that lead to the Stelvio, you will find the detour to the Switzerland, across the Umbrail Pass, on your left, before reaching the top of the Stelvio. On the contrary, for those arriving from the Vinschgau in South Tyrol, you will have to climb to the top of the Stelvio and descend a little from the Valtellina side.

The road goes down along an excellent asphalt, completed not so many years ago (oh yes, once it was all dirt). The curves and hairpin bends are fun both downhill and uphill and the view over the Val Müstair. The nature of the Biosphere it's really lovely and stopping for a photo or a simple stop will fill your chest with fresh and clean air.

The road ends at the bottom of the valley, after wide and amusing curves a Santa Maria, hence the name "Giogo di Santa Maria".

To see

La Biosphere Val Müstair is a regional nature park of national importance and together with the Swiss National Park and parts of the municipality of Scuol constitutes the first biosphere reserve of theUNESCO of the Swiss Alpine area.

From Santa Maria, in Switzerland we recommend taking the state road n ° 28, through the Val Müstair Biosphere, heading west. After a few kilometers you will find another beautiful and easy alpine pass, the Passo del Forno.

variants

In addition to the aforementioned King of the passivated, Pass of the Stelvio, we also recommend a "jump" on the other side of the beautiful Resia lake, perhaps the most photographed lake ever with its submerged bell tower.

Otherwise you can go back up Livigno, through the Passo del Forno and the Gallen tunnel (or Munt La Schera) for a fee and quite expensive (11 Francs), but which leads you to the splendid and imposing dam of Lake Livigno (or Lago del Gallo).
