Learn to go off-road, starting from scratch and prepare for today's beautiful Adventure Touring events.
We are at the second chapter of this series dedicated to beginners (and not only) of the dirt roads. Anyone who has read the first will already be going crazy in choosing the motorcycle or in the tires. Good! But now let's talk about what is actually the most important topic of all ever: LA SECURITY!
We know each other well: we did research on the internet, questions to friends, posts on social media and we are now more confused than before ... Some people say "come with me" I'll explain to you ... some will tell you you're crazy, keep going go to scooter… So I ask you a simple question: to learn English, would you pay or would you go with someone who has been to London 10 times, without qualifications or training who does anything else by trade? Maybe not.
THE OFF-ROAD DRIVING SCHOOL
Without detracting from the driving skills of many instructors (both official and unofficial), I have chosen to turn to those who have made it a profession, for many years, with method e discipline (you also want for convenience and short distance).
Of the many options that have presented themselves to me, I must be honest, the choice of Free Racing by Oscar Polli it has also been weighted on the basis of a key factor: it teaches children and teenagers, with all the responsibilities that this entails (who is father / mother can understand what I mean). It also organizes a lot of interesting travel and tour in Italy and North Africa.
Before venturing to the first lesson (with very affordable costs for a day) I therefore decided to attend one of his days "new entry"On the outskirts of Milan. A beautiful path where you can learn the basics, qualified and friendly staff who take care of the children and you (who are big children, be honest) and a lot, a lot of seriousness. I saw Oscar being as friendly as he was serious and determined in conveying the most important concepts regardless of age, but with an adequate method to make himself understood by everyone. And more importantly, whoever was there was telling me “you'll see, you'll do passivated like a giant ". Gone, I book!
EQUIPMENT AND SAFETY
So I get an idea of the "material" that I will need, in reality you can start with what you already have: stivali, full helmet, protezioni, gloves. Then obviously going into detail it is clear that the physical commitment is not a small one, for this reason the chin guards of the helmets from cross they are so protruding, to breathe better. Well-armored boots to give the stride to the ground or to protect the falling leg (it can happen, even when stationary), protections on the elbows, shoulders and back are taken for granted, don't forget them. Gloves, I recommend them light, to have greater sensitivity.
But above all, what you need to consider before any purchase and / or use is the SECURITY. You have to literally feel yourself Payments. This is a key concept for me, because even off the asphalt there are many pitfalls, albeit different: the ground does not have the grip of the asphalt, there can be stones, mud, holes ... falling, even when stationary or at very low speeds, it can happen, know it (even on asphalt for that matter).
For this reason, just as you invest in your dream bike, you don't have to save on safety and protection. Use a fiber helmet (rocks can be hard and pointed). A jacket with protectors homologated and back protector (if it's hot pettorina and cross jersey): in my case, I took the Stealth Jacket by Zandonà, specialized in protections, which I will use with cross jersey or under the jacket. Consider purchasing enduro boots or mixed road / enduro like the Alpinestars Tech 7 or the Corozal Adventure, with shin and joint protectors and the quality of the brand that made history in motorcycling. Remember that your health, like on the street, is worth more than anything else. On the other hand, in off-road vehicles there are not (or almost) all those dangers that usually undermine us in the city or on asphalt (traffic, cars, intersections, trucks…).
On the internet or at many retailers there are always many offers, so saving is within everyone's reach, but always look carefully at what you buy and remember that the Made in Italy it is often and willingly synonymous with quality and safety.
Gear up and see you in the next episode: OFF-ROAD DRIVING, the first notions.
