Motorcycle batteries, now more and more advanced and indispensable, let's see together how many types there are and when they must be replaced.
The battery of a motorcycle basically fulfills 5 functions.
- Goodwill, providing electricity for inrush
- Lighting, ensuring the energy for the operation of the various lights
- Switching, supplying energy to the ignition system
- recharge, as a voltage stabilizer, capable of absorbing fluctuations in the system electric
- Systems support, powering the safety systems and the memory of the control unit with the engine off
There are a number of types of batteries on the market for motorcycle, which differ on the basis of the construction material and functional characteristics. Let's now give a brief overview:
Traditional lead-acid batteries
They are generally found on vintage motorcycles or motorcycles with few electronic elements. They are the cheapest, but require regular maintenance, usually having to be refilled with electrolyte between seasons.
AGM battery
They do not require particular maintenance, they are resistant to atmospheric agents and of excellent performance.
Pre-charged batteries, AGM type
They do not require any maintenance, they are hermetic, of exceptional duration, resistant to vibrations and to the most extreme temperatures.
GEL batteries
They are resistant to vibrations, perfectly hermetic and do not need to be filled, even when activated. It is the ideal component for scooter.jet and motorcycles with advanced electronic system.
Hard lead batteries
Of excellent performance, very resistant, they are particularly suitable for motorcycles with very advanced electronic systems.
Lithium batteries
They do not need any particular modifications, it is enough to have the classic charger and its charge is very fast. They are not particularly polluting, but they drain faster. They are suitable for practically all types of scooters and motorcycles and are lighter in weight (up to 60%) than lead models.
LifePo4 batteries
They do not swell, if they are going to run out, they are equipped with a stainless steel compartment that guarantees excellent mechanical resistance and are the ones that pollute the least.
Failures and deterioration
The misfire of your motorcycle is often due to the battery, which is discharged or damaged. In the first case, to cope with the emergency, using the cables with the special pliers, you can connect your battery with that of another vehicle, making sure that the positive and negative poles coincide. In the event that this expedient does not work, in this case the degree of intensity that the component is able to provide should be checked with a battery meter. If the recorded voltage is too low, a replacement is inevitable in this case.
Average duration
Unfortunately, the batteries do not last forever and must be replaced after a few years. The maximum duration period is typically four years. If the motorcycle has been standing still for a few years, also in this case it is advisable to replace the battery before returning to use the vehicle. Another tip is to disconnect the motorcycle battery, if you do not plan to use it for example for a few months, for example during the winter season: this will prevent it from discharging prematurely.
