Short story
Montepulciano has always been coveted for many centuries between Siena e to ensure control of the Valdichiana and the Val d'Orcia. Florentines and Sienese fought until 1232 when the Sienese managed to conquer the city after having razed the walls to the ground. In the fourteenth century, mercantile activities flourished in Montepulciano becoming a hub of exchange between agricultural products of the Val d'Orcia and a large part of the Valdichiana.
What to see
Piazza Grande is the heart of Montepulciano and of the main events of the city, including the Bravio delle Botti, which is held every year in August, with the representatives of the eight districts who push the big barrels for the village. This square can be reached via the course, a road consisting of 3 segments overlooked by the main churches and palaces of the city, such as the church of S. Agostino with the facade of Michelozzo and la la Pulcinella Tower with the typical mask marks the hours. In Piazza Grande we find many prestigious buildings such as the Town Hall, Contucci palace and Nobili-Tarugi palace, covered in travertine. To make the square even more impressive there are also the Palace of the Captain of the People, well of Grifi and Leoni and the great unfinished facade of the Duomo, inside which you can count countless works of art.
Outside the walls
Immersed in nature, not far from the historic center, we find the church of San Biagio, masterpiece of Antonio da Sangallo, one of the most impressive and prestigious examples of Renaissance architecture of buildings with a Greek cross plan. The strategic position of Montepulciano makes it the ideal place to set out to discover this enchanting area of Toscana. You can literally get lost in between Pienza, the spa village of Vignoni bathroom, the famous Montalcino and many others villages enchanting.
Wine and cuisine
