Castel San Vincenzo

Castel San Vincenzo is a small medieval village lying on a ridge of rock at an altitude of over 700 meters overlooking the artificial lake, the symbol of the city: the Lake of Castel San Vincenzo. The town is home to the ancient Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, one of the most important of the Middle Ages. The abbey stood not too far from the sources of the Volturno, on the Piana di Rocchetta. It dates back to the beginning of the XNUMXth century AD and over time it became one of the most important monastic complexes in Europe, being in a strategic position, on the border between the kingdom of the Franks to the north and the kingdom of the Lombards to the south.

Lake of Castel San Vincenzo

It is an artificial lake built in the late 50s for hydroelectric purposes. It is fed by the streams of the Montagna Spaccata, from the neighboring municipalities of Alfedena and Barrea. The waters of the streams feed the Enel power stations in Pizzone, Rocchetta a Volturno and Colli a Volturno. Near the lake there is an area equipped for camping, given its sandy shores and bathing facilities
