Since debuting in 1975 as the GL1000, the Gold Wing has been considered the ultimate expression of Gran Turismo, a motorcycle with power, refinement and reliability such as to allow two people to travel to the most distant destinations in absolute comfort. The name "Gold Wing" has thus become synonymous with excellence for motorcycle tourism.
On the occasion of the model year 2018, to respond to demographic evolution and market changes, the development team of this iconic model decided to embark on a radical renewal strategy. The Gold Wing took a new direction. Thanks to its 6-cylinder boxer engine, completely redesigned to provide more torque and extraordinary power, it also became more compact, lighter and more agile, a 'Luxury Tourer' conceived for true "bikers" who love traveling, even when fully loaded and with the passenger, but with more style and absolute comfort.
The result was a wider appeal, to reach younger and more dynamic motorcyclists, without neglecting all those who have always found the maximum expression of travel comfort in this sumptuous 6-cylinder. With this goal, a new Gold Wing was born to be used, simply, always.
On the occasion of the model year 2020 updates were made to the suspension set-up (on the Tour versions), to the power supply maps and to the DCT gearbox, which further improved its effectiveness and comfort on every route and maneuverability at every pace, especially when maneuvering at low speed. It passed to the Euro5 homologation.
With the company model year 2021 the Gold Wing Tour has been improved in terms of load capacity, with a larger trunk, and in terms of passenger comfort, with a more relaxed riding position. In addition, new saddle materials have arrived and the audio system has been upgraded. All this always and only with a single purpose: to confirm its leadership among luxury touring motorcycles.
For the 2022 the queen of Luxury Tourer is unchanged in terms of mechanics, chassis and equipment, but new colors arrive for both versions equipped with the sensational DCT dual-clutch gearbox.
The GL1800 is available on the Italian market in 2 models. The base model "GL1800 Gold Wing" is equipped with side cases and standard windshield. The version called "GL1800 Gold Wing Tour" includes a top box and a high windshield.
The basis it is only available with 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and forward / reverse 'Walking Mode' functionality. In the case of the model 'Tour ' a version with 6-speed manual gearbox and electric reverse gear is also available. Choosing it in the DCT version is also present the Airbag.
Engine and frame have been jointly designed to advance the riding position and create a compact bike. The double-beam aluminum frame is built around the revolutionary front suspension, which allowed the engine to move further forward. The front wheel, in fact, moves up or down on a more vertical trajectory, offering excellent control and great stability of the front axle thanks to the considerable overall rigidity and the substantial reduction in friction.
The 6-cylinder flat engine delivers an exciting delivery of power and torque. Throttle control is Throttle By Wire, with 4 Riding Modes: TOUR, SPORT, ECON and RAIN. The traction control HSTC (Honda Selectable Torque Control) always keeps the rear wheel stable and, like the suspension adjustment and the action of the combined braking system (D-CBS) with ABS, varies according to the Riding Mode selected (only on Tour versions). Hill Start Assist (HSA) and the Start & Stop system further emphasize the driving experience and maximize fuel efficiency.
Il manual transmission is 6-speed, while the DCT dual clutch gearbox it has 7 gears, and provides specific settings for each Riding Mode in terms of clutch release, gear shifting speed and the rev range at which the up / down gear changes take place. The DCT gearbox also offers the function of slow forward and reverse (Walking Mode) to facilitate parking maneuvers. The version with 6-speed manual gearbox features electric reverse.
The GL1800 offers an extraordinary sense of freedom, which translates into pure driving fun. Incredible performance is accompanied by levels of luxury car relaxation: the sleek, aerodynamic fairing effectively channels air around the rider and passenger, the windshield is electrically adjustable and the seats ensure maximum comfort. Functionality like the system Smart Key, connectivity Apple CarPlay o Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity, increase convenience.
On the occasion of the model year 2021 new synthetic suede seat covers have been adopted and the seat position for the passenger has become more comfortable thanks to the ergonomically more favorable angle of the backrest. The high-performance audio system was also updated to output clearer sounds. The 2022 brings as a novelty only some colors. Below is a summary scheme.

The keywords of the GL1800 design team were: “Sophisticated shape, taut lines". The silhouette balances comfort and dynamic capabilities with the traditional superior quality of materials and finishes. The front is dynamically slender and combines the compact proportions of the fairing to create an unmistakable style.
The belt line, which runs from the front to the rear, divides and highlights the different functions of the upper and lower parts of the bodywork, enhancing the compactness of the bike.
The mechanical components contribute to the aesthetic result: the double-arm front suspension, the constant presence of the 6-cylinder boxer engine and the sinuous exhaust system, underline the exceptional levels of engineering and electronics.
But a touring bike of this lineage must combine functionality and aesthetics, which is why the designers have also directed their efforts towards ergonomics, optimal management of heating and air flows, to direct them around the rider and passenger. , who can thus enjoy pleasant dynamic comfort.
The aerodynamic profile Plexiglas is electrically adjustable in height and inclination by means of a practical command on the left electric block. There aerodynamic protection it is always at the top, accompanied by a pleasant feeling of space and freedom. However, an oversized windscreen, adjustable deflectors for arms and torso, and fixed deflectors for legs and feet are available as options.
With regard to the saddle, driver and passenger are separated, so the former can enjoy the pleasure of driving and the latter can relax and enjoy the ride. The shape of the driver's seat offers comfort and lumbar support, while allowing freedom of movement and an easy placement of the feet on the ground. Both saddles feature a luxurious synthetic suede upholstery; in addition, the angle of the passenger backrest is 23 °, for a relaxed and comfortable position.
The lighting system is Full ‑ LED and on the 'Tour' models the fog lights are standard. The upper part of the headlight assembly is equipped on both sides with 5 refined optical lenses that create a characteristic low beam with an effect Jewel Eye. The activation of the high beams, in the lower part, generates a stereoscopic effect. The front turn signals are integrated into the rear-view mirrors and have an automatic deactivation function (based on the difference in wheel speed and not on time).
Il Cruise Control it is adjusted with the practical controls on the right block. Its activation is indicated by a light on the speedometer and the set speed in the upper part of the LCD display to its left. With each change in cruising speed or when recalling the set speed, the transition is very linear. On versions with manual transmission, cruise control stops when you pull the clutch lever, act on the brakes or the accelerator. On versions with DCT double clutch gearbox, in automatic mode, after deceleration, the recall of the set speed can take advantage of appropriate gear changes.
The internal volume of the top box is 61 liters, for a total load capacity of 121 liters also considering the two side cases. The luggage compartments are easy to use. In the presence of the Smart-Key, the main button on the bike unlocks all the locks. It is also possible to temporarily unlock the luggage compartments via a button on the Smart-Key. The opening and closing operations are made smooth by effective hydraulic shock absorbers. Optional extras include a luggage rack to be fixed at the top of the top box and internal bags with an exclusive design. Among the many amenities present, there is also the flashing arrow button on the Smart ‑ Key, which allows you to identify your parked Gold Wing more quickly.
The capacity of the petrol tank is 21 liters. Thanks to the favorable weight and the excellent aerodynamics the Gold Wing, in both versions, base and Tour, runs 18,2 km/l (WMTC average cycle), with the result that the overall range is over 350 km.
The cockpit, with elegant analog gauges for speedometer and tachometer, three LCD displays, great 7 "TFT color screen central and the sophisticated push-button panel above the handlebars, is the most luxurious and complete you can imagine on a touring bike. The backgrounds exploit low-contrast dark tones and their conical metallic outer edges create a pleasant feeling of depth, accentuated by the LED-lit graduated scales. The feeling of control is rewarding and the look absolutely understated and elegant.
The 7 ”TFT color screen provides an incredible amount of information about the bike and the audio and navigation systems, as well as managing the HSTC traction control and suspension adjustment (only on Tour versions). The information is displayed in different segments in a functional order, so that the pilot can obtain all relevant data with minimal eye movement.
The brightness is adjusted automatically (the maximum brightness of the screen is 1000 cd) and in addition it is possible to set it by choosing between 8 different levels. Tire pressure is indicated as a numerical value on the display at the bottom left of the instrument cluster.
On the center console and on the Smart ‑ Key, the logo Gold Wing. Its two-tone 3D chrome design combines the strength and nobility of a lion's head with the majestic wings of an eagle ready to pounce on its prey by unsheathing its talons. There Smart Key allows you to activate all systems of the bike and also incorporates the emergency key.
The Gold Wing is compatible with Apple CarPlay for iPhone and Android Auto, therefore the driver can view the information and contents of his smartphone on the screen, including, for example, the address book, music playlists or web browser. Connectivity is also present Bluetooth and 2 USB Type-C sockets.
The high-performance audio system delivers rich, clear and excellent quality sound. The passenger has some of the audio controls available to ensure an even more enjoyable travel experience; they are located near the top of the right saddlebag and allow you to adjust the volume, change the source and scroll through audio tracks.
Il satellite navigator it is displayed on the central 7 ”TFT color screen and the system is equipped with a gyroscopic compass in order to obtain travel directions even inside the tunnels. You can remove any of the instructions while driving waypoint or go home. The maps are easily updated and up to 99 can be entered waypoint to plan even more detailed trips.
3.2 Frame and chassis
- Double beam aluminum frame with engine and rider in forward position
- Double wishbone front suspension and forward steerer
- Rear suspension with Pro-Arm single arm
- Hydraulic suspension damping electronically adjusted according to the Riding Mode set (Tour versions only)
- Shock absorber spring preload post. electrically adjustable (Tour versions only)
- Combined braking system D-CBS (Dual Combined Braking System) with ABS
The Gold Wing's double-beam die-cast aluminum frame is designed to accommodate the compact engine in a forward position. The thickness of the structure has been optimized in each segment to ensure a smooth and stable ride at all times.
Thanks to the geometry of the double wishbone front suspension with forward steerer, the riding position for rider and passenger is also advanced. In the fully compressed position, the rear of the tire is 24mm further forward than would be the case with an ordinary fork.
Another advantage is the reduction of the sliding friction (and therefore the improvement of the smoothness) compared to traditional forks with stems that slide in the chainstays; in this way the fluidity of response of the front is improved. Heavy duty bearings are used on all steering shaft bushings, thus further reducing friction.
The steering input, through the anchor points of the swinging arms, is separated from the damping function provided by the single shock absorber, thus making the handling of the handlebar more favorable. Furthermore, the piston rod The patented cross steerer connects the handlebar to the forward steerer, while the pivot position of the handlebar, with less mass around it (combined with the placement of the handlebars themselves) gives the rider a natural steering feel.
ABS works on a D-CBS combined type braking system (Dual Combined Braking System), which optimally distributes the braking power between the front and rear wheel. The ABS modulator is of the recirculating type, small and light, integrated in the ECU of the braking system, thus allowing to contain the overall weight of the braking system. The system also adapts the braking action to the set Riding Mode, automatically adjusting the braking characteristics to the situation to improve the safety active. Dual 320mm front discs feature 6-piston calipers, 316mm rear disc features 3-piston caliper.
The rear suspension with single shock absorber is also at the forefront. The single arm Pro-Arm it uses a pivot structure that guarantees the necessary stiffness. This configuration efficiently distributes stress on the pivot plates and simplifies maintenance, as well as contributing to excellent stability. Pro-Link linkage ensures progressive suspension action and superior comfort. Finally, the optimization of the connecting plates and the widespread use of ball joints eliminate the torsion.
On the Tour versions the electronic adjustment of the suspension damping is based on the set Riding Mode, and takes place by means of stepper motors housed inside the shock absorbers which, by moving the oil passage needles, modify its flow. Furthermore, the spring preload of the rear shock absorber is electrically adjustable through an intuitive system independent of the selected Riding Mode. The available settings are 4 and are based on the load on board: pilot only; pilot with luggage; pilot and passenger, pilot with passenger and luggage. The current setting is displayed on the right LCD display and carried out via the TFT screen using the controls on the handlebar or the knob joystick central. On the basic version, the spring preload is manually adjustable.
Steering head angle and trail are set at 30,5 ° / 109mm, with wheelbase of 1.695 mm. The standard Gold Wing DCT weighs in 367 kg with full of petrol. The Gold Wing Tour with 6-speed manual gearbox weighs in 385 kg with full, while the version with 7-speed DCT gearbox and Airbag has a total weight 390 kg with full.
Low-profile tires are mounted on the beautiful light-alloy wheels - 18-inch at the front and 16-inch at the rear 130/70 R18 M / C 63H in front and a performant 200/55 R16 M / C 77H at the rear.
3.3 Motor
- 6cc 1.833-cylinder boxer engine with 4-valve heads per cylinder
- Accelerator Throttle By Wire (TBW)
- 4 Riding Modes to customize delivery, brake force distribution and, on the Tour versions, HSTC traction control and suspension set-up
- Start & Stop with silent ISG system (Integrated Starter Generator) on the version with DCT dual clutch gearbox
- Hill Start Assist (HSA) system for hill starts
- 6-speed gearbox with assisted clutch / slipper on the MT version
A determining factor in the Gold Wing's appeal and total driving pleasure has always been its sensational 6-cylinder boxer engine. Powerful, fluid, with imperious torque delivery right from the lowest revs and in any gear, it delivers thrilling emotions every time you open the throttle. The cylinder heads have 4 valves per cylinder and the displacement is 1.833 cc.
The maximum power is 126 hp at 5.500 rpm and the maximum torque is equal to 170 Nm at 4.500 rpm. The bore and stroke measurements are square, 73 × 73 mm. Despite the large displacement and the fractionation, it is a compact engine. Both cylinder banks have 4mm offset cylinders and the liners are made of aluminum. The compression ratio is 10,5: 1.
Le Unicam tested they have finger rockers for the intake valves and roller rocker arms for the exhaust ones, with coaxial rocker arms for the intake and exhaust valves, thus being able to do without a valve lifter structure.
The combustion chambers are characterized by a design pentroof (roof) with 4 valves (instead of bathtub with 2 valves) with the intake ducts designed to determine vortex flows inside the combustion chambers and maximize efficiency. The piston walls have a molybdenum coating to reduce friction. The two compact radiators (197 × 219 mm), both with electric fan, are positioned in such a way as to make the most of the aerodynamic flows of the front.
THEThrottle By Wire throttle (TBW) makes possible vehicle dynamics strategies summarized in 4 Riding Modes. Each offers a mix of settings for engine character, power delivery, brake force distribution of the D-CBS system with ABS and, on the Tour versions, HSTC traction control and suspension set-up.
Il Riding Mode TOUR is the standard setting for comfort and power. It ensures a direct opening ratio between the throttle grip and the throttle body, with default values for the hydraulic suspension calibration and homogeneous distribution of the braking force between front and rear.
Il SPORT riding mode it has a throttle / throttle ratio that emphasizes acceleration, with more sustained suspension and dynamically distributed braking force.
Il ECON Riding Mode it offers maximum fuel economy and promotes relaxed driving and cruising speed transfers. The throttle / throttle ratio favors fuel efficiency and the hydraulic suspension damping and brake force distribution values are by default.
Il Riding Modes RAIN provides for the smoothest and most controllable power management possible, with a reduced throttle / throttle ratio, in order to maximize safety on wet or slippery surfaces. The distribution of the braking force is on the default values while the hydraulic suspension calibration is softer.
In all 4 Riding Modes the traction control HSTC (present only on Tour versions) always guarantees controllable acceleration.
The fuel system features a throttle body, with reduced diameter and thickness intake manifolds to optimize weight. The volume of the intake flow between the throttle body and the intake valve ducts is designed to speed it up and offer the best engine response.
The airbox “breathes” from two ducts, one positioned at the front on the left and one at the rear on the right. This structure generates vortices of the intake air with a double benefit: a more effective use of the entire surface of the air filter and a reduction in resistance. Furthermore, the two ducts have an internal conformation designed to align with the intake impulses coming from the engine at low revs, maximizing the response and the torque delivered to the small throttle openings.
The sound and driving pleasure offered by the Gold Wing's engine have always been its calling card. The double exhausts have an internal structure with two chambers plus a resonance chamber, without sound-absorbing material.
The typical low notes of the sound emitted by the powerful 6-cylinder engine are accompanied by deep pulsations without being noisy. For 2 of the 6 cylinders, the exhaust manifolds with a smaller cross-sectional area result in a gratifying depth of engine sound without exceeding the “volume”.
THEISG (Integrated Starter Generator) combines generator and starter motor into one component, with the generator acting as a starter when powered by a reverse flow of power. The transmission gears of the ISG are helical and determine the very low mechanical noise.
Among the main features of the Start & Stop system include the ultra-quiet starting of the engine, thanks to theISG, and the fluidity of departure, obtained through the combination of the gearbox DCT and accelerator TBW. With the Start & Stop system active, when you stop at a traffic light, the engine switches off automatically after 3 seconds; to restart it, the pilot simply rotates the throttle.
The system is set up so that hydraulic oil pressure is applied in advance to the first gear clutch circuit when the engine is started, to clear the time between throttle rotation and starting. To ensure maximum fluidity of movement, the TBW gradually opens the throttle body in proportion to the opening of the accelerator, to give that smooth delivery that no Gold Wing can do without. Start & Stop can be deactivated and reactivated via the settings menu.
The version with traditional manual gearbox has 6 gears with the last of type overdrive to reduce fuel consumption at cruising speeds. It is also equipped with a cam damper between the clutch and transmission, to separate each inertial mass, minimize noise and offer speed and smoothness of shifting as well as reliability and durability of the gearbox itself.
To facilitate hill starts, which normally require a certain skill in releasing the brakes and, in the case of the model with manual gearbox, in modulating gas and clutch, the HSA (Hill Start Assist).
Its operation is as simple as it is effective. After stopping on a slope, by further pressing the brake lever, the ABS modulator generates hydraulic pressure for the rear brake caliper. At the moment of departure, while releasing the brake lever, the hydraulic pressure is temporarily maintained on the rear brake caliper (for about 3 seconds), allowing you to start uphill as if you were on a flat surface. When the system is active, the HSA warning light comes on to inform the rider.
On the version with manual transmission, the hydraulically operated clutch is assisted and of the slipper type. It is made up of a small number of discs and is soft to operate and smooth to take off. Reverse is electric.
3.4. Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)
- 7-speed DCT dual clutch transmission
- Smooth, quiet and fast
- 'Walking Mode' function for millimetric parking maneuvers
- Total integration with the 4 Riding Modes
- Excellent low-speed and "open-close" maneuverability
Now in its twelfth year of production, Honda's dual clutch technology has more than 200.000 DCT-geared motorcycles sold in Europe. It guarantees quick and smooth shifting and its use quickly becomes intuitive. The system uses two coaxial clutches, one for starts and odd gears, therefore 1a 3a e 5a gear, the other for even gears, then 24 4a e 6a. The overall dimensions in the crankcase are identical to those of the traditional manual gearbox, because the clutch shafts are concentric.
The exclusive Honda dual clutch gearbox fits perfectly to the Gold Wing's 6-cylinder boxer engine, whose development was centered on the DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). The latest generation of the system, applied to the Gold Wing, is the first with 7 gears and even weighs less than the manual gearbox!
Each clutch is actuated independently by its own electro-hydraulic circuit. At each input to change gear, it occurs simultaneously Switch between one clutch and another, making it instantaneous the disengagement of a gear and the engagement of the next or the previous one.
The result is very fast, silent and irrelevant gear changes on the set-up of the bike, which accelerates and slows down more effectively and without any pitching, with maximum dynamic efficiency and in full comfort for both the rider and the passenger. Among the further advantages, the great reliability and durability (since it is not possible to "go wrong gear" or not insert it correctly), the impossibility that it switches off by mistake of the driver, the ease of driving in congested urban traffic and the maximum comfort of gear.
But how do the commands work and how are the various modes activated? At the moment of starting the motorcycle is in neutral. To engage the first gear, press the "D" button on the right block, the number "1" of the first gear appears on the dashboard. From now on, you can put the throttle on and start driving, because the Gold Wing will shift gears automatically. At any time, it is possible to act on the paddles on the handlebar of the left block, "+" and "-", to manually engage the next gear or downshift (override) and, when the time comes, the DCT control unit will automatically start changing gears again. If, on the other hand, you want 100% manual shifting, just press the gray “A / M” button on the right block; from that moment the decision on when to change gear is totally up to the driver. The system is obviously foolproof, so gears are not engaged or downshifted if the request is not compatible with the engine speed, thus making it virtually impossible to damage the engine or gearbox.
Finally, the Honda DCT gearbox control unit, using the throttle opening data, speed, engine speed and gear in use, is able to recognize climbs and descents, always maintaining or inserting the appropriate ratio.
The DCT version is equipped with a parking brake on the rear wheel, which can be easily activated and deactivated with the practical control on the left side of the fairing.
The DCT of the Gold Wing provides that in the low gears the ratios are close together, in order to maximize the comfort of low speed changes, and at the same time make the most of the power and torque of the powerful 1.833cc engine in the long ratios. In both cases the pitching between one gear and the other is completely absent, making life on board simply fantastic, even for the passenger.
All potential noise issues have been brilliantly avoided through the development of the latest generation DCT. Noise damper pads are present on both ends of the selector fork guides and the main arm, canceling out any contact that can produce noise.
A spring damper was installed between the clutch and the primary drive shaft to absorb contact and torque in the direction of rotation and thereby diminishing the noise resulting from the meshing between the two components.
The revolutionary is present on the GL1800 Gold Wing Walking Mode. This is a DCT shift mode that allows the bike to move at a reduced speed, 1,8 km / h forward and 1,2 km / h in reverse. The function can be activated instantly (with the bike stationary), via a practical switch on the left handlebar and then using the handlebar paddles + and - to determine the movement.
But how does it work mechanically? Observing the split coaxial main shaft, the outer one relating to the odd gears is connected to the inner one by a chain through the gears on the countershaft. With this design, the outer primary driveshaft acts as a reverse layshaft; the result is a lightweight reverse mechanism with a compact design and without the need for a lay shaft.
From a practical point of view, when activating the mode Walking Mode, the two clutches of the DCT system are used to enable movement reverse with clutch 1 and movement forward with clutch 2. In this way the bike can be moved forwards or backwards through the clutches alone, without real use of the gears. Furthermore, to ensure maximum effectiveness and safety, the Throttle By Wire system adjusts the speed by millimetrically controlling the engagement of the clutch in use, maintaining a certain engine speed and offering total controllability.
On the versions with DCT gearbox, the 4 Riding Modes are integrated with the gear change management logics. The settings are the same as the version with manual transmission in terms of engine, delivery and suspension set-up, but have additional parameters specific to the DCT system.
Il Riding Mode TOUR prefers smooth clutch engagement and automatic gear changes over a wide range of revs, from low to high, favoring torque delivery where possible.
Il SPORT riding mode provides a more direct engagement of the clutches, with gear changes programmed in a medium-high rev range.
Il ECON Riding Mode it offers a soft clutch engagement, making the most of the engine's torque qualities, with gear changes tending to be no more than half the speed.
Il Riding Modes RAIN it ensures a smooth engagement of the clutches and automatic gear changes over a wide range of revolutions but keeping the gears engaged for longer and with downshifts at low revs, with the aim of keeping the motorcycle's reactions as neutral as possible.

We remind you that the consumption values indicated were obtained by Honda during numerous tests, all carried out with the standards required by the WMTC regulations. The tests concerned only the "basic" versions of the bike (and without options), with a single rider on board. In fact, fuel consumption can also vary significantly due to different conditions, abilities or types of driving, but also based on the presence or absence of the passenger on board (such as any luggage), the maintenance carried out on the motorcycle, the weather conditions. , tire pressure and / or a thousand other factors.
