The Kaunertal glacier
It is the youngest of the glaciers of Tyrol and the road to reach it was built in 1980, along the lines of a pilgrimage path and leads directly to the beginning of the Glacier Weisseeferner (2.750 m asl). Part of the glacier is part of the Natural Park Kaunergrat with its 58.920 hectares.
Itinerary
La strada Kaunertaler Gletscherstrasse leads from land corner at the edge of the perennial ice, at an altitude of 2.750 meters, directly to the glacier Weißseeferner. This scenic road is toll-free and during the summer season it is accessible from 7am to 19pm, while in winter it closes at 17pm.
The last stretch, 26 kilometers long, faces a difference in height of 1.500 meters and offers 29 locations from which to admire the artificial lake Gepatschstausee, the lake Weißsee or the crag of "Fernergarten".
It is possible to go up to the glacier by cable car Karlesjochbahn which leads to a viewing platform at 3.108 meters from where the view on the peaks of Italy, Switzerland and Tyrol is unmatched.
