Passo dello Stelvio SS36, the king of the Alpine passes
Il Stelvio pass, in the main photo, (2.757 meters above sea level) is the highest car pass in Italy, in front of the hill of the Lamb, and the second highest in Europe preceded only by the hill of the Iseran. During the First World War it was the scene of bitter clashes between the Austrian and Italian infantry, being the pass right on the Italian-Austrian border. After the victory of November 4, both sides were Italian, therefore the pass lost its strategic significance to connect Vienna to Milan and therefore the seasonal closure was decided. It connects Bormio and the Valtellina with Trafoi and the Vinschgau, it counts well eighty-eight hairpin bends, of which forty-eight on the South Tyrolean side and forty on the Lombard side.
Umbrail Pass
You can also detour to the Switzerland directly from Umbrail Pass o Yoke of Santa Maria: and the pass alpine carriage highest in Switzerland, opened to traffic in 1901. From the pass you have a view over the Val Monastero, the Fraele valley, the Valtellina and the Val di Trafoi. From the yoke it is possible to descend to Switzerland, or to Santa Maria Val Müstair, through a small road where the asphalting works of the last 2,5 kilometers were carried out only in 2016. The road is narrow and sloping and descends for 13 kilometers into the underlying val Monastero, after 1.126 meters of altitude.
Gavia Pass SS300
The Pass of Topsail (2.618 m asl) connects the Val di Gavia and the upper Valle Camonica, marking the administrative border between the provinces of Sondrio and Brescia. The road, very panoramic, is slightly demanding and in some places very narrow, it is therefore advisable to follow it from Ponte Legno in the direction of Santa Caterina di Valfurva (in Alta Valtellina), up to Bormio. About 300 meters away from the pass it exists, unique in Italy, a strip of Arctic Tundra, relic of the last glaciation (Würm Glaciation), which, lying on small morainic bumps, covers an area of about four hundred square meters.
Passo del Foscagno and Passo Eira
Il Passo del Foscagno connects the Livigno valley with Valdidentro and Valtellina, up to Bormio. The pass is located at a height of 2.291 m asl and can be reached via the state road 301 del Foscagno. The pass is the only way to reach Livigno without having to go through Switzerland (through the Poschiavo valley and the Forcola di Livigno). The stretch connects the Foscagno Pass to Livigno and also crosses the Eira Pass located at 2208 m asl Image by Gianni Crestani from Pixabay
Mortirolo Pass
Also known as the Foppa pass, it connects the Valtellina with the Val Camonica, through the homonymous valley of the Mortirolo, connecting the province of Sondrio with that of Brescia through the municipalities of Grosio and Monno.
